The following statements list some advantages and disadvantages of various sources of energy. Read and tick (V) the appropriate box A (for the advantages) or D (for the disadvantages), then compare the results with partner's.
Advantages (A) | Disadvantages (D) |
4. Water power provides energy without pollution. (Nguồn nước cung cấp năng lượng không gây ô nhiễm) 6. Solar energy is not only plentiful and unlimited but also clean and safe. | 1. Fossil fuels will be exhausted within a relatively short time. Geothermal heat is available only in a few places in the world. If the wind does not blow, there is no wind energy. A nuclear reactor releases radiation which is dangerous to the environment. (Một lò phản ứng hạt nhân giải phóng bức xạ gây nguy hiểm cho môi trường.) 7. It is expensive to build a dam for hydroelectricity. (Xây đập thủy điện rất tốn kém.) |
Work in pairs. Talk with your friend about the advantages and disadvantages of using each alternative source of energy, using the suggestions from Task 1.
Useful language

clean and safe expensive
unlimited, renewable polluted
convenient limited, non - renewable
cheap, simple devices/technology harmful
exhausted
A: I think that wind power can be an alternative source of energy.
B: Why do you think so?
A: Because our major sources of energy are running out while wind is abundant and unlimited.
B: I know it is also clean and safe to the enviroment. However, it is not available when there is no wind.
A: In my opinion, solar energy can be an alternative source of energy.
B: What is the reason that you think so?
A: Because our major sources of energy are running out while solar energy is plentiful and infinite.
B: I know it is also clean and safe to the enviroment. However, it is only possible during the day time.
A: I think that nuclear power can be an alternative source of energy.
B: Can you explain the reason?
A: Because our major sources of energy are running out while nuclear power is unlimited.
B: However, it can be very dangerous. A nuclear reactor releases radiation which is harmful to the environment.
A: I think that water power can be an alternative source of energy.
B: What makes you think so?
A: Because our major sources of energy are running out while water is unlimited.
B: I know it also provides energy without pollution. However, it is expensive to build a dam for hydroelectricity.
A: For me, geothermal heat can be an alternative source of energy.
B: Why do you think so?
A: Because our major sources of energy are running out while this heat is available.
B: I know it also provides energy without pollution. However, it is possible only in a few places in the world.
Work in groups. Express your belief on the increasing use of alternative source of energy in the future, using the ideas from Task 2.
A: I believe that more and more people will use the alternative such as solar energy, wind power, nuclear power,... as a source of energy in the future.
B: What makes you believe that?
A: Because they are unlimited and can be renewable.
C. But they may be expensive or only available during it's sunny or windy.
D. I hope the progress of science and technology will help overcome these problems.
In my opinion using the alternative sources is the necessary way to solve the rapid exhaustion of our major sources of energy. The alternative sources such as solar energy, water power, wind power… are clean and safe for our life. Besides that they are unlimited and can be renewable. Nowadays, there are some developed countries that use the alternative sources parallel the major sources of energy. Day after day, science and technology develop so fast. There are more windmills, dams are built, more solar panels are set on the roofs of houses to create energy. I think in the future, the alternative sources will replace completely our major sources of energy.

Many countries are now growing palm oil trees to gain energy. The rush to energy derived from plants will lead to deforestation, push small farmers off the land and lead to serious food shortages and increased poverty unless it is carefully managed. Rich countries want to see crops grown for fuel to help stabilize the price of oil, open up new markets. But the United Nations urges governments to beware their impacts. The report, which predicts winners and losers, will be studied carefully bio-fuel industry which wants to provide 25% of the world’s energy within 20 years. 17 countries have committed themselves to erowing the crops on a large scale. It has been said that 10% of all fuel must come from bio-fuels by 2020. The crops have the potential to stabilize the price of oil, but forests are being cut to grow plantations of palm oil trees. These crops will take the best land, which will increase global food prices. Growing bio-fuel crops can be harmful to farmers who do not own their own land, and to the poor who buy food. Using bio-fuels results in some reductions in emissions but we cannot fight climate change by large scale deforestation. Investments need to be planned carefully to avoid generating new environmental and social problems.

Solar energy captured by solar panels is a limitless form of energy, as the earth is bombarded with extreme amounts of solar energy every day, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It's also clean, producing no carbon dioxide, and is very low-maintenance, since solar panels have no moving parts.
Unfortunately, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory says its high installation cost makes it up to four times more expensive than the cost of electricity from a standard utility company. For optimal operation and maximum energy production, it requires year-round sunny weather and is very expensive if repair is necessary, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
