Tapescript Listening Test Yourself D English 12
High in dense bamboo forests in the misty mountains of southwestern China lives one of the world's rarest mammals: the panda. Pandas feed mainly on bamboo shoots and leaves. Occasionally they eat other plants, fish or small animals. Pandas eat fast and they eat a lot. They spend 12 hours a day doing it.
Pandas are extremely endangered today. There are only about 600 of these black-and-white bears in the wild and a hundred in captivity. One of the reasons is that the survival rate of the cubs is very low: more than half of them die shortly after birth. Chinese government is considering cloning the panda in their efforts to save this animal.

Guide to answer Writing Test Yourself D English 12
Rhinos are one of the endangered animals that are on the verge of extinction. Rhinos are large animals and need a lot of space to live in. Now people can find them in grasslands, tropical and sub-tropical forests in Africa and southern Asia. A rhino is about from 1,2 to 1,8 meters high and weighs from 1,000 to 3,000 kg. Their main food is grass and plants. A rhino's average lifespan is about 40 years.
It is estimated that there are now about 17.000 rhinos in the world. But there is a great decline in the population of rhinos due to the hunting and poaching, and especially their habitat destruction.
World Wildlife Fund has been working to conserve rhinos for over 40 years. It has launched rhino conservation projects to protect this species from extinction by translocating rhinos to the conservancy run by local communities.

Exercise 1: Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.
Plants and animals hold medicinal, agricultural, ecological value. Endangered species must be protected and saved so that future generations can experience their presence and value.
Plants and animals are responsible for a variety of useful medications. In fact, about forty percent of all prescriptions written today are composed from the natural compounds of different species. These species not only save lives, but they contribute to a prospering pharmaceutical industry worth over $40 billion annually. Unfortunately, only 5% of known plant species have been screened for their medicinal values, although we continue to lose up to 100 species daily. The Pacific yew, a slow-growing tree found in the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest, was historically considered a "trash" tree. However, a substance in its bark was recently identified as one of the most promising treatments for ovarian and breast cancer. Additionally, more than 3 million American heart disease sufferers would die within 72 hours of a heart attack without digitalis, a drug derived from the purple foxglove.
There are an estimated 80,000 edible plants in the world. Humans depend upon only 20 species of these plants, such as wheat and corn, to provide 90% of the world's food. Wild relatives of these common crops contain essential disease-resistant material. They also provide humans with the means to develop new crops that can grow in inadequate lands such as in poor soils or drought-stricken areas to help solve the world hunger problem. In the 1970s, genetic material from a wild corn species in Mexico was used to stop a leaf fungus that had previously wiped out 15% of the U.S. corn crop.
Plant and animal species are the foundation of healthy ecosystems. Humans depend on ecosystems such as coastal estuaries, prairie grasslands, and ancient forests to purify their air, clean their water, and supply them with food. When species become endangered, it is an indicator that the health of these vital ecosystems is beginning to unravel. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that losing one plant species can trigger the loss of up to 30 other insect, plant and higher animal species. The northern spotted owl, listed as threatened in 1990, is an indicator of the declining health of the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest. These forests are the home to over 100 other old-growth dependent species, which are at risk due to decades of unsustainable forest management practices. Pollution off the coast of Florida is killing the coral reefs along the Florida Keys, which serve as habitat for hundreds of species of fish. Commercial fish species have begun to decline, causing a threat to the multi-million dollar tourism industry, which depends on the quality of the environment.

You don’t need a fancy juicer to have fresh squeezed orange juice in the morning – although it does make the process go by much faster. You can make a glass of orange juice to go with your breakfast whenever you want. You will only need a citrus juicer that costs around $10 at any home goods store. There are many other products on the market that will make the juicing process much easier, but if you are only making small quantities, juicing by hand is not hard. Just be sure that you have quality oranges that will provide plenty of juice. Roll the oranges around on the counter and smack them together a little bit before cutting them in half to extract the juice. Directions:
1. Cut each orange in half
2. Use a hand or electric juicer to get all of the juice out of the orange. These juicers have a strainer on them which will catch the seeds and the large pulp. If you would like your orange juice pulp free, strain it before drinking.[/private]

Teacher plays an important role in every child’s soul. To me, miss Dung-my head teacher. She taught literature from grade 10 to 12. She is tall, young, slim body with round face and bright smile. She is a devoted and responsible teacher as she always prepares carefully all the lessons before going to class. She teaches us the way to love people and becoming a good citizen for the country. Moreover, student love the way she teach, mark the score and correct the mistake. In my opinion, she is not only my teacher but she also works as my second mother at school. She helps student through thick and thin in life. Whenever facing up with any problem, I have no hesitation to share with her then she finds out the best solution or gives me some helpful advice. Additionally, if we don’t attend the class for some reasons, she immediately contacts us and asks whether we are fine. It seems that she spend her youth to learn and give deep knowledge to young generation and she really enjoys the job. Most of the time she spend for taking care of children from education to daily life. She is one of my idols because of her talent, personality and career. Therefore, almost student look up to her and thank her for kindness and responsibility.

Every day of the year throughout the world, about twenty million paper bags and newspapers are screwed and thrown away.
Making paper requires a lot of wood pulp and the work of million of workers. Many countries have had plans to recycle waste paper to save money and labor. In countries where there is the cooperation of the public, paper mills recycle as much as sixty percent of waste paper. Their simple work is to take away the ink, crush it and make it into pulp again. For every ton of recycled newsprint, twelve trees can be saved. The photo taken at the dining room of a house depicts the warm atmosphere at the party of a family. The room looks quite spacious and clean with sun light shining through the windows and the white-painted walls. We can see a fireplace on the right corner of the photo and a long table covered with a white table cloth and wooden chairs. There are lots of delicious dishes of food, glasses of fruit juice and some bread arranged on the table. Sitting in the middle of the photo is a 65-year-old man who looks very good-looking with white hair, fair skin, a square face and a broad smile on his mouth. He is wearing a white jumper over a blue shirt. He is holding a spoon in his right hand and saying something funny to his children. On his left is a man in his early thirties. He is dressed in a dark green shirt and has short brown hair and a straight nose. Clinching his hands in front of his chest, he is looking at the woman sitting on the left of the photo. On the right of the photo is a 7-year-old girl who is putting on a blue blouse and jeans. She is so cute with long blonde hair, fair complexion and an oval face. She is using two hands to hold a dish of food delivered by the woman sitting on the left of the photo. On the left of the photo is a woman in her mid-twenties. She looks very pretty with her light blonde hair, blue eyes, and a high nose. She is giving a plate to the girl and smiling happily. The woman dressed in a red V-necked top is holding a spoon in her right hand and looking at the man sitting across from her. The 10-year-old boy who is wearing a checkered long-sleeved shirt is looking at the old man and smiling cheerfully. He has short brown hair, fair complexion and a straight nose. All of them look very happy in this party.
